COMMUNITY HEALTH VOLUNTEERS

Common Ground has created a program with the Milwaukee Public Health Department to follow up with community members who test positive for COVID-19 and are sent home to heal. Over 20 Common Ground leaders from healthcare professions will be making daily calls to the patients who opt in to the program. The volunteers will ask about the patient’s blood oxygen level and heart rate.

These two vital signs are measured by a pulse oximeter which is provided to each patient. Additionally, over 15 clinicians have volunteered to staff a hotline for patient support if symptoms worsen or numbers become dangerous.

Each patient can feel safe healing at home knowing that a trained volunteer will be checking in on them daily. Volunteers will also be asking patients if they have other needs such as food, housing, childcare, etc. We have partnered up with The Greater Milwaukee Foundation and the American Health Education Center (AHEC) Milwaukee chapter to help to fund this project. Common Ground could expand the program if there is excess demand.
